Children of Gilgo Beach suspect are 'trapped in hell'

The lawyer, Vess Mitev, said his clients Christopher Sheridan, 34, and Victoria Heuermann, 26, have been fighting in the days since their father, Rex Heuermann, was arrested last month in the high-profile case. profile.

Investigators invasively searched the family’s Long Island home, and the brothers have not had access to money even to buy food because the accounts have been frozen by the investigation, Mitev said. Mitev is trying to ensure that his rights are protected during the investigation.

“They have rights and resources that must be protected,” Mitev said. “These include the next steps of the investigation, which we do not know what they will be. But as you can imagine, it is developing day by day.”

Rex Heuermann, 59, was arrested in New York in July 2023, more than a year after a police task force explored his possible connection to the unsolved case known as the “Gilgo Beach Four.” named for the beach on Long Island, New York, where human remains were found more than a decade ago.

Rex Heuermann is charged with three counts of premeditated murder in the 2009 deaths of Melissa Barthelemy and Megan Waterman and Amber Costello in 2010, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

He is also the prime suspect in the 2007 disappearance and death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, according to a court document from prosecutors, but has not been charged in connection with that fourth homicide.

Through his lawyer, Rex Heuermann has said that he is not guilty of the charges against him.

Evidence shows Rex Heuermann’s wife and children were out of state when the three women are believed to have been killed, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said last month.

Rex Heuermann lived with his wife and children in the town of Massapequa Park, across the bay from where the remains were found, in far southeast Nassau County.

None of the suspect’s children have reason to fear about the investigation, Mitev said.

“The accusations came as a shock to the entire family unit,” Mitev said. “There is no concern. There is only the desire to be duly advised and represented”.

Mitev declined to say what would be next for the suspect’s children in the investigation.

“They are emotionally, physically and mentally constantly having to reassess their position in life in real time,” Mitev said. “It has taken an incredible toll on them and they are doing the best they can as a family unit.”

“They have shed a lot of tears,” Mitev said.

Rex Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, filed for divorce after his arrest. The woman had “no idea” of her husband’s alleged actions and the onslaught of public attention has been “extremely overwhelming” for her and her two children, she and her lawyer, Bob Macedonio, told CNN on July 31. .

The family home was “vandalized” by investigators, Macedonio said.

“Everything in the house was turned upside down,” Macedonio said. “The dresser drawers were emptied. The bathroom tub, which was vinyl, was open. The floors were destroyed. The sofas and mattresses were removed.
