China has criticized on Monday the joint declaration of the United States, South Korea and Japan after the trilateral summit held on Friday at Camp David, on the outskirts of Washington, where they promised to cooperate to strengthen their trilateral ties in the face of provocations from Beijing and Pyongyang.
The spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Wenbin, pointed out at a press conference that Washington, Seoul and Tokyo have interfered “in China’s internal affairs”, have “discredited the image of Beijing” and have created “confrontation” in the countries of the Indo-Pacific region.
In this sense, Wenbin has assured that Taiwan is an “internal affair of China” and has emphasized that “the greatest threat” to regional peace “is the separatist activities” on the island, as well as “the support of external forces” for Their independence.
The Chinese foreign spokesman has also accused the three countries of “sowing discord” in the Indo-Pacific, saying that the activities of Chinese ships in the South China Sea are “reasonable” and “lawful.”
“The United States has also brought together its allies to carry out frequent military exercises in the waters surrounding China, including the South China Sea, showing its might and aggravating regional tensions, peace and stability,” it said.
Wenbin thus stressed that “all attempts to provoke a new Cold War in the Asia-Pacific region will be strongly resisted by the countries and peoples of the region.” “China will continue to safeguard its own sovereignty and security interests,” he concluded.
The United States, South Korea and Japan criticized Beijing’s “dangerous and aggressive behavior” in the South China Sea in a joint statement after the summit. Specifically, they denounced the militarization of the area, the “dangerous” use of ships and “military boats”, as well as “coercive” activities and “illegal, unreported and unregulated” fishing.
The three countries, which announced trilateral exercises in response to tensions with Beijing and Pyongyang, also reaffirmed “the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as an indispensable element of security and prosperity in the international community.”
