Xi Jinping says he is ready to participate in peace talks but did not want to give any indication of how far he is willing to go to put pressure on Russia.
SVT’s China correspondent Tilde Lewin says that China wants to play the role of peace broker but that it cannot stop the war.
– Russia is more and more dependent on China and China could therefore exert pressure on Russia. But China cannot stop the war. The two countries are not really close friends, they are in fact very far apart, she says.
Less risky trading relationships
During the meeting, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also presented a list of demands for reforms in order for European companies to have a less risky and more equal relationship with their Chinese partners.
And there is still a lot to do to open up the Chinese market even more: Last year, 6.4 million containers were delivered from China to the EU, but only 1.6 million containers went from the EU to China.
Tilde Lewin believes that China’s relationship with the EU today is much better than that with the USA – but at the same time it is fraught with risk.
– China’s increasing ambitions involve risks, but the EU and the US make different interpretations of what this means.
