OICA monthly data show that, between January and April of this year, Portuguese cinemas registered 3.3 million spectators, i.e. 878,373 more tickets issued (36%) than in the same period of 2022.

In terms of gross ticket revenue, comparing the two periods, the increase is 44.8%, that is, 6.1 million euros, for a total of 19.8 million euros.

Also taking as a reference the statistical data before the covid-19 pandemic – a global event that affected the frequency in cinemas -, cinema exhibition in Portugal has not yet fully recovered.

Between January and April 2019, ICA accounted for 4.6 million spectators and 24.8 million euros in revenue.

According to the ICA, until April, 22 Portuguese feature films, or with Portuguese co-production, had been commercially premiered, which represents a share of 17.2% compared to the total of 128 feature films premiered in theaters.

However, in terms of audience, the Portuguese cinema exhibition share represents only 2.2% (71,464 spectators) of the total of 3.3 million entries.

In terms of box office revenue, compared to the 19.8 million euros registered until April, the share of Portuguese cinema was 1.5% (293,369 euros).

Until April, the most watched Portuguese film in theaters was ‘Amadeo’, by Vicente Alves do Ó, with 12,213 viewers.

The second most watched Portuguese film by the Portuguese in cinemas was the animated short film ‘Ice Merchants’, by João Gonzalez, this year’s Oscar candidate, with 11,459 spectators.

Among the ten most watched Portuguese films this year, there are also three other animated feature films to highlight: ‘Bruno Aleixo’s Christmas’, by Pedro Santo and João Moreira, premiered last Christmas, but whose exhibition lasted for 2023 , ‘Nayola’, by José Miguel Ribeiro, and ‘Forbidden to dogs and Italians’, by Alain Ughetto, co-produced by Occidental Filmes.

‘Avatar: The Water Path’, by James Cameron, premiered in December 2022, still remained at the box office leader until April in national cinemas, with 465,880 spectators.

In second place, and having only premiered on April 6, comes ‘Super Mario Bros: The Movie’, by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with 349,792 spectators.
