Close to the end of the year festivities, the demand for products in cardboard beverage, plastic and glass containers increases considerably, as well as the level of solid waste generated after consumption. For this reason, the Recycle Me Association calls on citizens to dispose of their post-consumer containers correctly, which are not garbage, and which allow the promotion of recyclingthe conscious production and sustainable use of these resources in our country.

Currently in Peru, an average of 21 thousand tons of municipal waste is generated per day, produced by more than 30 million inhabitants. Which is equivalent to 0.8 kilograms of waste generation per person daily. These figures increase considerably during the end of the year celebrations, reaching, for example, up to a 50% increase only in the capital.

It should be noted that, during the early morning of January 1, 2022, Lima woke up with 500 tons of waste due to the celebrations the night before.

The correct disposal of solid waste not only contributes to recycling, but also prevents these elements from ending up in forests, beaches, rivers or in the cities themselves, generating pollution.

According to data from the Ministry of the Environment (MINAM), almost 50% of the waste we generate ends up in a dump or on the streets. The role of all stakeholders in the recycling chain is essential to exercise responsible consumption and minimize the waste generated.

A clear example is the work carried out by grassroots recyclers and recycling microenterprises, since they play a key role in the use of recyclable materials, turning them into an economically sustainable activity, but also making the system work, collecting, collecting and conditioning recyclable materials so that they can be used by the processing industry.

Currently in Peru there are approximately 180,000 recyclers and some 500,000 people depend economically on this activity, according to the Ministry of the Environment – MINAM. Likewise, the MYPES dedicated to this work make recycling viable on a scale, making it an economically sustainable activity. Only in Metropolitan Lima and Callao, Recíclame has managed to identify 217 recycling microenterprises.

For this reason, the association offers the following recommendations so that everyone can recycle and thus contribute to the circular economy:

Be a responsible consumer

Make sure with each purchase that the purchased packaging is reusable and recyclable.

Sort by material type

Identify solid waste at home such as paper, beverage carton, plastic or glass, separate it from the rest of the elements and put it in separate bags by type of material.

Deposit usable waste

Take them to the nearest containers, municipal clean points or deliver it to the district recyclers.

Currently, the Recíclame association has been developing the campaign “Let’s Recycle More, Let’s Set an Example” with various television personalities with the aim of promoting awareness and responsibilities among citizens towards the sector.

“From Recíclame, we call on the public, private and civil society sectors to join efforts in the development of the recycling chain. It is crucial to continue promoting the transition towards a Circular Economy for the care of our ecosystem for the benefit of all Peruvians”, said Renzo Gomero, general manager of Recíclame.
