The district council has decided: Hanging baskets for around 10,000 euros should upgrade the dreary city. Where they should hang is also clear.
Bottrop’s city center should become more beautiful, more attractive and more colourful. If the Bottrop-Mitte district council has its way, the installation of hanging baskets should help. 9800 euros have now been made available for the purchase.
Investigations were carried out in December to determine whether the masts could even bear the weight of the hanging baskets. Now the result is available. Yes, you can. A hanging basket should weigh 60 kilograms, according to Markus Wenker, head of the district administration office. The administration identified four areas in the city center as possible locations: Gladbecker Strasse (pedestrian zone), Berliner Platz, central bus station (ZOB) and a city center axis (Horster Strasse, Altmarkt, Osterfelder Strasse).
Originally, the design of all areas envisaged a total of 91 traffic lights at an estimated total price of 22,750 euros. Too much money for the district council’s budget.

“Our budget is limited,” said district representative Sandra Behrendt (SPD). The representatives agreed on the need to purchase the floral decorations. “We are making the start, but long-term financing is not possible. We don’t have the district funds for that. We have to find other ways of making money,” said Sigurd Köllner (Greens). Behrendt on future financing: “Hopefully we’ll find someone who will take on this measure.” And Andreas Freitag (CDU) adds: “It can’t be a permanent solution on the part of the district.”
Ultimately, they agreed on 9800 euros. This sum gives the budget. The money will be used to buy hanging baskets and hang them up in the pedestrian zone on Gladbecker Strasse and at the central bus station. The administration expects 250 euros per hanging basket. As Markus Wenker reports, the company that installs the traffic light also takes care of the planting and watering.
