Clashes break out in Peru amid national march against Boluarte

Caracas.- Members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) throw tear gas canisters at protesters in the city of Huancavelica, department of the same name, in the middle of the national march called against President Dina Boluarte.

Through images captured by local media, the moment in which police repress a series of men, who respond by throwing stones, can be seen.

An hour earlier, some protesters set fire to the door of the Huancavelica Regional Prefecture and the confrontation began precisely from that place.

Until now, it has not been confirmed how the hostilities began.

“The united people will never be defeated,” the protesters chanted in front of the police, before the repression began. “Not one step back, until victory,” they added.

For her part, former parliamentarian Indira Huilca criticized this action. “The Police are attacking a peaceful concentration in the Huancavelica square, there are women and men with Peruvian flags,” she said.

Protests against Boluarte

This July 19, the demonstrations against Boluarte have resumed. Thousands of people are expected to march in all regions of the country to demand the resignation of the president and the advancement of general elections.

As in Huancavelica, dozens of people mobilize under the cry “Dina assassina”, in reference to the deaths registered in the past anti-government protests, between December 2022 and February 2023.

At least 67 people lost their lives, of which 49 occurred in clashes with the PNP and the military, in what human rights organizations consider murders.
