Chicago (USA), Apr 29 (EFE).- Becky Hammon, coach of the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA, is one of the profiles that the Toronto Raptors are studying to replace Nick Nurse, who was fired after one season far from the expectations of Canadians.

The Raptors got the go-ahead to interview Hammon, who if hired would become the first head coach of an NBA franchise.

Hammon, who led the Aces to the 2022 WNBA title and who was a collaborator with Gregg Popovich on the San Antonio Spurs, appears on a list of candidates that, according to US media, also includes the Spanish Jordi Fernández, assistant to Mike Brown on the Sacramento Kings.

The coach already made history in 2020 by directing an NBA game as the first coach to replace head coach Popovich.

After a successful career as a player in the WNBA, in teams like the San Antonio Stars and in international basketball, in the Spanish Rivas Ecópolis and Ros Casares Valencia, Hammon was coach of the year in 2022 in the American women’s league.

In his first season in charge of the Aces, Hammon’s players had the best record in the regular season (26-10) and were the best in offensive performance, until they were crowned champions.

In 2014, she retired as a player, moved to the bench and signed as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs, making her the first woman to serve on an NBA coaching staff.

This Friday, in a press conference organized by the Aces, Hammon did not comment on the rumors about the interest of the Raptors and stressed that she is fully focused on her work in Las Vegas.
