Mexico City.- Physical activity and a healthy style in food will help to prevent the risks of suffering from prediabetes, in the run-up to diabetes.

“Before the metabolic syndrome was focused a lot on diabetes, but since many years ago this definition of metabolic syndrome has changed and the problem is in overweight and obesity, so doing exercise and a good diet is what we are going to avoid getting to that situation.

“If we maintain an adequate balance between the energy that the body has, that is going to help us to have good metabolic control and the best way we have is with a healthy lifestyle”, explains doctor Cristina García.

Find out which exercise goes best with your lifestyle, even a moderate walk will bring you benefits.

“It’s very different to do physical activity than to do exercise; physical activity is to do any movement throughout the day since I wake up, whereas exercise is an activity structured with the intention of burning calories.

“The walk helps us to keep active throughout the day, but as the body adapts to being physically active, we can change the walk to a moderate intensity and convert it into an exercise. If you are not used to doing a moderate activity exercise. , you can start with a walk”, points out the specialist.

The Federación Mexicana de Diabetes reported that worldwide more than 300 million adults have prediabetes and for 2024 it predicts that the number will increase to almost 500 million.

Prediabetes does not present symptoms and is an alteration of the metabolism that is characterized by having high levels of glucose in the blood (in addition between 100-125 mg/dl), but not high enough to suffer type 2 diabetes (in addition 126 mg /dl or higher).

The specialist argued that insulin resistance is reversible before converting to diabetes.

“Insulin resistance is telling us that the pancreas is working harder to secrete insulin with the aim of being able to control all the glucose levels, but it starts to cost work in the body and secretes more insulin than normal.

“Insulin can be fought, the first step is to change your lifestyle, take a healthy diet plan and exercise to lose weight and make your body easier to lower glucose levels”.
