Dozens of organizations are calling on the government to present a food strategy in the summer “at the height of ecological, social justice and public health issues”.

Seventy organizations working for the environment, health or consumer protection are asking the government on Monday to “resist the pressure from certain lobbies” in order to present a food strategy for the summer “at the height of the ecological, social justice and public health issues”.

In an open letter to Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, these organizations (Action Against Hunger, League Against Cancer, Climate Action Network, UFC-Que Choisir, etc.) urge “the government to learn from the failure past policies” on food.

“Our food plays a major role in climate change, the collapse of biodiversity and the explosion of chronic non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, cancers, etc.)” which “affect the poorest people first. more precarious,” they write.

“Determine the orientations of the sustainable food policy”

They call on the government “to resist pressure from certain agricultural and agri-food lobbies” opposed to the ban on advertising “for products that are harmful to health and to the planet” or even to set a target for reducing the consumption of meat and dairy products.

The Climate and Resilience Law, adopted in 2021, provides for a “national strategy for food, nutrition and climate” (SNANC) to be developed by July 1, 2023.

According to the website of the Ministry of Agriculture, this strategy should in particular “determine the orientations of the policy of sustainable food, less emitting of greenhouse gases, respectful of human health, more protective of biodiversity (. ..)”.
