After web browsers, after operating systems (macOS Mavericks and Windows 11), tabs will arrive in the notepad application of Windows 11. This is the unexpected discovery made by the site Windows Central, which came across a screenshot showing a software version with this feature. A photo that was supposed to remain secret.
The circumstances under which this screenshot was taken are unclear, nor are the reasons why it ended up online — it turns out that the image was shared on an employee’s Twitter account. , who deleted his post a few minutes later. Too late: Internet users had already spotted the snapshot, which has since been widely distributed.
First Notepad… then Paint, calculator and other Microsoft software?
This option should arrive with Windows 11, the most recent OS from Microsoft – it was released in October 2021. Windows 10 does not appear today to be affected by this tab system. It is known that the software giant worked in this direction several years ago, for Windows 10, with a feature called “Sets”. Alas, this is a project that was never completed.
Obviously, the idea of tabs was never buried. Proof of this is with the file explorer of Windows 11, but also of notepad – it would then be the very first application made in Microsoft to take the leap. Others could follow later. One can imagine an interest in software like Paint, for drawing, or the calculator.
The arrival of tabs in Microsoft software – and not just for the OS itself – should occur in 2023, at a date still uncertain: the screenshot shows a warning banner in which it is requested not to talk about it or to take screenshots (this is a failure here), a sign that the development is not quite finished yet.
