Over 3,000 people took part in the five-year study of on-duty assault by police officers. This alone is a merit that should also be highly appreciated by the officers – in addition to the fact that those affected by police violence have entered retraumatizing situations by filling out the long questionnaire.

For the first time there is a scientifically classified feedback on the application of the monopoly on the use of force that was given to police officers in Germany. As expected, the “violent workers” and their union representatives react defiantly to the research findings. The alleged policeman Rainer Wendt, federal chairman of the German Police Union (DPolG) and thus the most right-wing professional representation of police officers, spoke in earlier publications by the researchers of “sentiment mongering against the police”. He accused the final report of “conspiracy theories” and that the researchers had a “disturbed relationship with our constitutional institutions”.

It’s officials like Wendt who have a troubled relationship with the rule of law. Because that also includes scientifically examining the exercise of the monopoly on the use of force – without political whitewashing in favor of the officials, as ordered by former Interior Minister Horst Seehofer in another study.

The view of the police takes up far too much space in the public debate, and this is also one of the findings of the study. Journalists in particular should therefore never accept their presentation without checking it. This also applies to the rumblings of criminal protectors like Rainer Wendt. If police unions were interested in trust in policing, it would be better to get rid of their agitators sooner rather than later.
