Cristina Kirchner will receive this Monday Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the Senate, within the framework of the visit that the President of Brazil will make to Argentina to participate in the VII Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of States Latin American and Caribbean Associations (CELAC), which will take place on January 24 in the City of Buenos Aires.
The vice president and the highest representative of the Brazilian Workers’ Party had had a telephone communication more than two months ago, after Lula defeated Jair Bolsonaro in the second round last November. There both agreed to meet on his first visit to Argentina, already as head of state.
The last meeting between Cristina and Lula was in December 2021. On that occasion, both shared a dinner in Olivos with President Alberto Fernández and participated in the act in Plaza de Mayo for Democracy and Human Rights Day.
During the meeting that will be held this Monday afternoon, the head of the Senate and the president of Brazil will address issues related to lawfare and disqualification from holding public office.
From Kirchnerism they consider that the sentence that the former president received in the trial for the Highway cause works as a kind of mirror with which Lula received from Judge Sergio Moro in July 2017.
Lula in Argentina
The Brazilian president will arrive in the country on Sunday at 9:00 p.m. He will be received at the Ezeiza Airport by the foreign minister, Santiago Cafiero, who will accompany him in a series of activities that will take place on Monday morning. Around noon, Lula will meet at Casa Rosada with President Albero Fernández and will sign different trade integration agreements with various cabinet ministers.
The Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, and the Ambassador to Brazil, Daniel Scioli, as well as Cafiero, will also participate in the conclave. Lula will be accompanied by the foreign minister, Mauro Vieira; the Minister of Economy, Fernando Haddad; and Lula’s top adviser on foreign policy, Celso Amorim. In the afternoon there will be a meeting with Cristina Kirchner in the Senate, while in the evening, although it has not yet been confirmed, Lula could have dinner with the President in Olivos.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Lula will participate in the VII Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
