Like every Thursday, the columnist Valérie Heurtel reports the good ideas and initiatives of the French. To fight against food waste, canteens donate their uneaten meals to solidarity fridges or to a grocer.

These are appetizing leftovers from the canteen: grated carrots, spinach… In Saint-André de Cubzac (Gironde), everyone can help themselves from the shared fridge. At the end of meals in the canteen, leftovers are put in jars. This anti-waste idea germinated four years ago in the head of Laurence Pérou, deputy mayor. The device has been adopted in all the schools of the town, and is very useful for precarious inhabitants.

Apps to avoid wasting food

Similar initiatives exist: “In Congrier (Mayenne), everything left in the canteen bowls is taken to the village café-grocery store. Thomas, the boss, resells it for between 1 and 2 euros a portion”, explains Valérie Heurtel on the 13 Hours set. In the Var, two young women are fighting against waste at source with Econome, their small mobile cannery: “They recover damaged fruit, vegetables with small defects but which are still good. They make preserves, purees, jams.” Smartphone applications also exist to avoid waste at home, such as Check Food and Frigo Magic.
