He Agricultural Markets Advisory Group (GCMA) explained that the decree for ban the import of transgenic corn for human consumption, will generate tortilla and masa prices increase in southern and southeastern Mexico.

“The country imports between 600 and one million tons of white corn, mainly for these states, and that is why if the import is prohibited, the supply of this product will be affected, boosting inflation, which is contradictory,” said Juan Carlos Anaya, general director of the GCMA in an interview with La Verdad Noticias.

The import, use and distribution of glyphosate and transgenic corn will be prohibited in Mexico, after the federal government published a decree in this order in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) on the afternoon of this Monday, February 13.

This new regulation entered into force this Tuesday, February 14, and has been controversial for foreign producers and large consumers installed in the country.

The executive pointed out that this may open an international controversy within the framework of the Mexico, United States and Canada Treaty (T-MEC), even though imports for animal and human industrial use continue.

In this last case, the executive stressed that the authorities are going to initiate an investigation to find an alternative to replace transgenic corn and glyphosate.

Anaya added that the government has not based its decisions on the prohibition of this product on studies.

However, the administration has pointed out that the consumption of these products can lead to cancer, which has been questioned.
