Corona pandemic: Green expert Dahmen against commission of inquiry

Health policy spokesman accuses Kubicki of dubious intentions – the SPD also has doubts – Kubicki: “We absolutely need them as a society”

Osnabruck. Green health expert Janosch Dahmen has rejected calls by deputy FDP chairman Wolfgang Kubicki for a commission of inquiry to deal with the corona pandemic. Dahmen told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ): “During the pandemic, Wolfgang Kubicki repeatedly took extreme positions and tried to use rhetoric that was partly close to the AfD to talk about a social division. I lack the imagination to believe that he of all people has an interest in serious, forward-looking processing.” A commission of inquiry is associated with a great deal of effort, bureaucracy and costs. “And there is a danger that in the end it will be more of a struggle for interpretation sovereignty and subsequent blame, and that further public confidence will be lost,” said the Green politician of the NOZ.

SPD faction deputy Dirk Wiese also points out that an inquiry commission is not “the last word”. The Federal Constitutional Court has already passed judgments on the constitutionality of the measures. The Ethics Council has already issued a statement. There are now important critical studies on the school closures. The processing is already underway, emphasizes Wiese. “You have to think carefully about which body is the right one to draw the right conclusions for future pandemics,” says Wiese. An inquiry commission was not agreed in the coalition agreement. If there is a commission, then there would have to be a “broad consensus” in Parliament.

FDP party leader Wolfgang Kubicki told the NOZ: “There will be an inquiry commission. We are in very constructive talks with our coalition partners, and I don’t know why they are actually opposed to an inquiry commission. We need them as a society absolutely.” Kubicki is convinced: “We can only bring society back together if we, as politicians, clearly name the mistakes that have been made.” He personally “driven to the barricades” that unvaccinated people were excluded. “What kind of way of thinking is that? No one has reflected on whether this is compatible with the human dignity of our Basic Law.” He was surprised at the speed with which people were willing to sweep away basic rights.

The health policy spokesman for the Union faction, Tino Sorge, also says: “We have to work through that. I think it’s a very important signal that we want to learn from the decisions made in the pandemic.” An inquiry or even a federal-state commission would be suitable for this. One would have to agree on the task of the investigation across faction boundaries. This includes admitting mistakes. At the same time, nobody should be pilloried. “The traffic light must take the initiative,” explains Sorge in the NOZ.
