The European Parliament will elect a new vice-president on Wednesday noon who will take over from Eva Kaili.

Reading time: 2 mins

Eva Kaili was officially dismissed from her position as 5th vice-president on December 13, after being placed under an arrest warrant by the Belgian courts for suspicion of corruption, money laundering and membership of a criminal organization.

In all likelihood, the candidate from the centre-left S&D group is expected to garner a majority of votes. This is Marc Angel, of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party.

MEPs had until Tuesday 7:00 p.m. to submit their candidacy, either proposed by a political group or by a 20th of the members of the assembly. Eva Kaili had been vice-president, for the S&D group, since the middle of the legislature, i.e. January 2022. The distribution of responsibilities having been the subject of an agreement between the three main political groups (EPP – S&D – Renew), the Logic suggests that it is the candidate of the Social Democrats who replaces the Greek post for post.

Conservatives and Liberals have also been careful not to propose a candidate. “We are keen on the balance resulting from the mid-term discussions and Marc Angel’s career is entirely in line with what is expected of a vice-president of the European Parliament”, underlines Stéphane Séjourné (Renew) on Tuesday.

The Greens/EFA and the far-right group ID (Identity and Democracy) have proposed a candidacy, respectively of the French Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield and the Italian Annalisa Tardino.

The vote is secret and the election requires a simple majority.
