The power supply is one of the essential components of a desktop PC, but here we only ever talk about the watts. The design has remained basically unchanged for years. At Corsair, the question was asked: does it have to be? And came to an interesting answer.

Anyone who has ever assembled a PC knows that the power supply usually comes at the end of the considerations and planning. No wonder: nothing works without a power supply unit, but the black and heavy case could not be more boring. This is probably also the reason why no manufacturer has yet asked how a power supply unit (PSU) could be improved.

Simple but effective change

However, the US company Corsair has now faced it and came up with a simple and at the same time surprising solution: Because you have for your new RMx Shift ATX 3.0 series the arrangement of the connectors changed. These are placed on the side and no longer on the opposite end of the case’s back (i.e. where the cold device cable is connected).

Corsair introduces the first PC power supply with side connectors

How PC gamers We also wonder why someone is only now coming up with this idea. According to the manufacturer, this is “the world’s first power supply unit with laterally arranged plugs”. And once you watch the whole thing (in the accompanying video) and think about it, it makes perfect sense. Because the connection options on the side allow for significantly better cable management, because the mains cable can now also be routed via the area on the side provided for this purpose in most cases. Besides, this also makes it easier to swap out other components because you don’t have to dig through the power cables running in the main area of the case.

Admittedly, RMx Shift PSUs (which come in four versions between 750W and 1200W) are not suitable for all types of cases, but it would probably make sense for the industry to make this a standard. In any case, the power supplies currently fit into all Corsair’s own cases and should also fit into third-party cases, provided they are at least 210 millimeters wide and offer enough lateral space for the cables, according to the manufacturer.

Summary

  • Corsair asks the question: Does a power supply have to be the way it is?
  • Answer: No, the RMx Shift ATX 3.0 series has connectors placed on the side.
  • This design facilitates cable management and component replacement.
  • There are four versions between 750W and 1200W.
  • The power supplies fit in all of Corsair’s own cases and other cases
  • They must provide enough lateral clearance for the cables.
  • Industry should make a standard out of this idea.
