The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, sent messages to the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, to the Comorian President, Azali Assoumani, whose country is the rotating president of the African Union (AU), and to the Secretary Executive of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu, as part of a common and unified approach to end the fighting in Sudan.
A press release made public by the Presidency of the Republic today, Tuesday April 18, 2023 indicates that: “As part of his attentive and continuous monitoring of the dangerous developments in the situation in Sudan, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, current president of the Arab Summit, on Tuesday sent messages to the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, to the Comorian President, Azali Assoumani, President of the AU, and to the Executive Secretary of IGAD, Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu “.
This press release explains that the initiative of the President of the Republic comes in view of the accelerated deterioration of the situation in Sudan against a backdrop of continued armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, FSR, which have made heavy loss of life and property, which calls for international action to stop the bloodshed and find a peaceful path to resolving the deep crisis in Sudan.
Call to end clashes Sudan: Tebboune calls for collective efforts
Tebboune pointed out that the dangerous and unfortunate developments taking place in the sister Republic of Sudan, with their internal complications and external repercussions, have become a common challenge that requires the concerted efforts of all regional and international actors. And therefore calling for “a common and urgent action to avoid a new escalation and stop the fighting between the Sudanese brothers and compel them to prioritize wisdom and resort to the virtues of dialogue to resolve their differences”.
Wishing also “to spare the Sudanese people the dangers of slipping into a spiral of bloody violence, which threatens social peace and the path to a political settlement in Sudan”.
Furthermore, after appreciating individual efforts, Tebboune now calls for collective efforts to call on the brothers in Sudan, with one voice, for an immediate cessation of all armed clashes.
Tebboune assures Algeria’s readiness to intensify its efforts
In the same vein, President Tebboune stressed “Algeria’s readiness to intensify its efforts in cooperation and coordination with regional and international partners”.
Supporting in his message, “in order to contribute effectively to the efforts and collective efforts aimed at ending the fighting between the Sudanese brothers and urging them to quickly return to the peaceful path to resolve the Sudanese crisis in a definitive and lasting manner”.
In this regard, the President of the Republic called for reflection on joint and united action between the four organizations (UN, African Union, League of Arab States and Intergovernmental Authority for Development, IGAD), in order to support the Republic of Sudan. overcome the current crisis.
