Berlin/Munich.
Even the best vacations come to an end. Anyone traveling by car should not be able to avoid one or the other delay next weekend. Where are the longest traffic jams?

Easter is over – the holidays sometimes still go on. Or they end, as in seven federal states next weekend (April 14th to 16th).

That brings a lot of travel traffic onto the autobahns. You can hardly avoid the traffic jam, he says ADAC in his prognosis. However, the traffic jam is not quite as tense as at the beginning of the holidays and on the holidays themselves. Also for the Auto Club Europa (ACE) long traffic jams are inevitable on the return routes. Also, some are only just starting their vacation.

Where and when does it get particularly crowded? The days at a glance:

Friday (April 14): Especially around the metropolitan areas, the highways fill up nationwide from early noon. While the ACE expects a slightly lower risk of traffic jams, since many are still free, the ADAC expects the greatest disruption on Friday and Sunday.

Saturday (April 15): The ACE anticipates heavy traffic on the freeways. From morning to noon, many travelers are likely to head towards holiday areas. The club cites the period between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. as peak times.

Return travelers on the south-north connections (A5, A7, A9, A61, A81 and A9) and on the east-west connections (A2, A3, A4, A6 and A8) also have to be prepared for traffic jams and slow-moving traffic. Also full: the routes from the North Sea and Baltic Sea and those around the metropolitan areas.

Sunday (April 16): Sunday is also dedicated to the return travellers, who are likely to make their way north and west from early noon – they also start their journey home from the coasts.

Summarized: ACE and ADAC consider delays in the metropolitan areas of Berlin, Hamburg, Rhine-Ruhr, Rhine-Main, Stuttgart, Munich, on the trunk roads to and from the North and Baltic Seas and on the following routes (often in both directions) to be possible:

Return journey from Austria and Switzerland

Travelers are also better off planning more time for return journeys on the classic transit routes in Austria and Switzerland. The main travel times are comparable to those in Germany.

Delays are therefore to be expected, especially in the north on the Tauern, Inntal and Brenner autobahns as well as the Fernpass route in Austria and on the Gotthard route in Switzerland.

On the latter, the ACE expects significant traffic jams and longer waiting times on the south-north axis. The club also points out possible block handling with corresponding traffic jams in front of the south portal of the Gotthard tunnel.

Waiting times on the Gotthard route

There is also a lot of traffic on the San Bernardino route from Bellinzona to Chur (A13) and on the A1 (St. Margarethen – Geneva). Deviating via the A13 Chur is usually worthwhile if you have to wait more than an hour on the Gotthard route.

Delays are also likely on the return journey at the borders from Austria to Germany. However, the ADAC does not anticipate waiting in line for more than 30 minutes.

You can see how long you have to wait at the Walserberg (Salzburg – Bad Reichenhall), Kiefersfelden (Kufstein Süd – Kiefersfelden) and Suben (Ort i. Innkreis – Pocking) crossings online at the Austrian infrastructure company Asfinag.

About the situation on the Alpenstraßen informs the ACE online. (dpa)
