“Natural beauty” isn’t just reserved for celebrities and models. Many amateur photographers would like to take portraits of friends, acquaintances and family members, but often don’t know how. But with professional tips, you can photograph your non-models perfectly. In the cover story of the new Issue 3/2023 of c’t photography The Austrian photographer and film producer Andreas Bübl explains what it takes to present non-models attractively in addition to a relaxed atmosphere and a healthy dose of humor.
Beauty ideals are constantly changing, what was attractive ten or 20 years ago seems outdated today. But natural beauty comes from within and that’s what it’s all about. For the photographer, this means recognizing and working out the special characteristics of his model.
He should develop a good relationship with the person in front of the camera and work closely with his (non-)model to make him feel safe. Trust, recognition and an open approach are particularly helpful for inexperienced models so that they can feel comfortable and open during the shoot. It’s important to take the time to get to know the person, find out their interests and preferences, and listen to their ideas and feedback.
Another key to success: a positive atmosphere at the beginning of the shoot. This is a special moment of anticipation and excitement. Experienced photographers know that when photographer and model come together to create something beautiful together. A good mood not only influences the entire shooting, but also the quality of the pictures at the end.
