Cuban dictatorship reports 81 new attacks against the free press

HAVANA.- The Cuban Institute for Freedom of Expression and Press (ICLEP), warned about the wave of repression unleashed by the dictatorship of Miguel Díaz-Canel on the island against social communicators, in its recent report, it counts 24 journalists and communicators as victims of any of the 81 attacks recorded during the month of April.

Of those affected, 24 are independent journalists or communicators, 12 activists, nine citizens, seven political prisoners, two opponents and one artist, reveals the Institute.

In this sense, it is indicated that the person with the most acts of harassment registered against him during the month was the journalist José Luis Tan, who was detained for five days in the Villa Marista State Security barracks, subjected to torture, interrogations , deprived of access to justice and who was previously the victim of two administrative fines, two police summonses, threats and an Internet blackout.

Harassment and attacks against the free press

As part of the actions committed by the Miguel Díaz-Canel dictatorship, the Cuban Institute for Freedom of Expression and Press lists cases of: threats, psychological attacks, discredit campaigns against journalists for their informative work, police summonses, threats against citizens for publicly demanding their rights and against political prisoners who denounced violations committed in prisons.

It should be noted that in April, four ICLEP directors and a journalist were subjected to house arrest, threatened with being accused of crimes if they went out to report on International Workers’ Day.

Cubanet journalist Camila Acosta and Armando Sardiñas, a collaborator of this medium, were also arbitrarily arrested based on their profession. In addition, journalist José Luis Tan and the directors of the magazine Convivencia Dagoberto Valdés and Yoandy Izquierdo suffered arbitrary arrests. Among the activists, Yadir Escalona for requesting information from the authorities, while Yoelexis Acosta was arrested for being suspicious of some posters that appeared in his town. Likewise, the Ladies in White Laura María Labrada and Niurka de la Caridad Ortega for distributing bulletins from the independent press in the streets and finally, citizens Adisbel Bueno and Aroni Yanko García were arrested for expressing themselves through social networks.
