Cubana suffers attempted femicide with hammer blows in Bolivia

A Cuban woman was hospitalized after her partner tried to kill her with a hammer in the state of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, on July 2.

Ayamey Najarro Cabrera, 27, suffered a collapsed skull, other head and hand injuries, after her partner struck her six times on the head with a hammer and fled, local media reported.

The attacker, Juan Carlos Maldonado Cortez, a bricklayer from Santa Cruz, had been in a relationship with his victim for more than two and a half years.

The attack occurred specifically in the town of San José in the municipality of La Guardia and the victim was admitted to the San Juan hospital, where he underwent several surgeries.

“I woke up to the second blow that he gave me with the hammer. I had to crawl to the door to call for help.” recounted this Cubanwho was sleeping when the attack began, from the hospital to the newspaper Duty.

The day of the attack, Najarro Cabrera had an argument with Maldonado Cortez after he arrived drunk at the house where they both lived with her two children.

“You will not see me again,” said the attacker, who left the house after these words.

After the assault, Ayamey’s two children, ages three and seven, as well as their mother, came out of their rooms and found the wounded woman covered in blood who was crawling on the floor asking for help.

“His idea was to kill her”, denounced a local television channel Yamina CabreraAyamey’s mother, who specified that Maldonado Cortez had threatened her daughter on other occasions.

“The children have created a trauma for themselves,” he added.

“The operation went well, the doctors have told me that with a recovery I will soon be able to be discharged. Just be calm, recover little by little,” said the victim in another interview from the hospital on July 8.

Ayamey, who four years ago arrived in Santa Cruz with her two children and her mother, where she worked as a cashier, has been discharged since July 10 and continues her recovery treatments at home.

The Bolivian media do not specify whether the attacker was finally captured.
