Cubans will protest before the MINREX this July 5

Given the delay of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) of Cuba to legalize their documents, a group of citizens called a peaceful protest before the Office of Attention to the Population of that body, in Havana, this July 5.

The said office is located at H street between 5th and Calzada, in Havana’s Plaza de la Revolución municipality. According to the call, sent to DIARIO DE CUBA, the demonstration is scheduled for 9:30 AM. This is a desperate action by people who only want their documents to be legalized in a timely manner, in order to obtain Spanish nationality.

“We are already at the limit and we cannot afford to waste any more time, it is time to act and find a solution,” says the text.

“We have endured enough already! We just want to have our documentation ready in the fastest possible time and to be Spanish; it is our right. It is time to get serious and unite as a community that we are”, maintain the conveners.

“We will not leave until they find a solution to this urgent problem,” they say.

In this, people who are waiting for the legalization of a document by MINREX are asked to look for it on the page and take a screenshot of their status.

Then they must open Twitter, tweet the photo and add the text they want, in addition to the hashtags #Minrex #MinrexNoMasDemora #MinrexYMisPapeles #MasSolucionesMenosExcusas. They must add @SoberonGuzman and @MinRex, and then copy the link from the tweet and post it in the group.

Ernesto Soberón Guzmán is the general director of Consular Affairs and Cuban Residents Abroad (DACCRE)del MINREX.

The call for this peaceful demonstration comes after months of complaints from Cubans regarding the work of MINREX. In a recent post on the Facebook page of the institution, a user who identified himself as Yanko Li denounced that it has become a business and that the procedures do not go out on time “if you do not pay the individuals who agree with them.”

To silence the critics, at the beginning of June, MINREX announced that it had legalized more than 93,000 documents for procedures abroad during the month of May and that the staff available to perform this service had increased.

“As a result of the efforts made by the staff of the MINREX Legalizations Department and the measures adopted, at the end of May, 23,305 documents are legalized on a weekly average,” Soberón Guzmán wrote at the time in a thread on Twitter.

The figure represents “15,203 weekly documents more than those legalized in January 2023,” he added.

Despite the figures handled by Soberón Guzmán, many outraged Cubans considered the announcement disrespectful and denounced the delay of up to five months in their cases.

most of the demands of Cuban citizens are related to the legalization of registration documents to present before the Embassy of Spain. This occurs after the entry into force of the Democratic Memory Law, known as “Grandchildren Law“, which allows thousands of Cubans to opt for Spanish citizenship.

In May 2023, an official press report evidenced scams and acts of corruption around the legalization of documents. The growing demand for this service is related to the current migratory crisis that Cuba is experiencing. People, in general, need to take documents proving their marital status, their academic level or personal data that are requested in other countries.
