LADY Judi Dench says she finds it “impossible” to read scripts because of her deteriorating eyesight.

The British actor icon, 88, suffers from macular degeneration, which causes progressive loss of vision.

It does not cause total blindness but can make daily activities such as reading and face recognition difficult.

She told the BBC’s Graham Norton Show: “It’s become impossible and because I have a photographic memory I need to find a machine that not only teaches me my lines but also tells me where they appear on the page.

“I used to find it really easy to learn lines and remember them. I could do all of Twelfth Night right now.

Dame Judi has also hailed her new film Allelujah, an adaptation of an Alan Bennett play, as a “huge cheer for the NHS”.

It follows workers in a geriatric ward at a small Yorkshire hospital facing closure.

She added: “He came out at a really good time.”
