A freight train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed in Ohio, US, at risk of explosion. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine urged everyone within a mile (1.6 km) of the scene of the accident to evacuate their homes.

One of the tank wagons on the derailed train was about to explode after an extreme rise in temperature, sources said. Splinters could fly up to a mile as a result. There is also a high probability that toxic gases could be released.

Most residents have already evacuated their homes, but some are holding out, according to the statement tweeted by Gov. DeWine. Around 50 wagons of the freight train, some of which were loaded with vinyl chloride and other chemicals, derailed on Friday evening in the town of East Palestine in eastern Ohio.

Several of the tankers caught fire. Residents within a mile radius were asked to leave their homes days ago because explosions could occur.
