Last Tuesday James Gunn, one of the co-CEOs of DC Studios, announced the first chapter for the new DC universe that will include movies, series, animation and video games, which is called Gods and Monsters. During the announcement James Gunn showed some comics which his vision was inspired by and most of these have sold out in digital stores ever since.
James Gunn posted a video of just over five minutes on his Twitter account where he talked about the next DC movies and his new universe, starting with the confirmation that The Flash will restart the DCEU so he can start from scratch. After this we will see a few movies that have been in production for some time but the new DC Universe will begin in 2025, with the Superman movie: Legacy.
In the presentation, James Gunn said that the announced productions take inspiration from certain comics but are not direct adaptations, something that will make DC Comics fans happy who know these stories. Among the comics we saw at the presentation are Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely’s All-Star Superman, Warren Ellis & Bryan Hitch’s The Authority, Grant Morrison’s Batman Saga, Tom King’s Superman: Woman of Tomorrow and the Swamp Saga Thing by Alan Moore, plus another pair.
In the days following the presentation, we saw how most of these comics were sold out in digital stores like Amazon, starting with the most popular ones like Superman: Woman of Tomorrow and Grant Morrison’s Batman omnibus. However, it quickly became clear that fans are eager for new DC Comics stories, as even The Authority sold out after the announcement of their movie.
Yesterday James Gunn said he spoke to Jim Lee about the issue of out-of-print comics, sharing a note about The Authority, saying that DC Comics will have more comics for sale very soon. Gunn has also shared posts in recent days noting that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Grant Morrison’s first Batman omnibus, and All-Star Superman are among Amazon’s best sellers, the first of which sold out the day after the announcement.
