Good news for members of the German minority in Ukraine and Russia

Yesterday, Parliamentary State Secretary Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter reported to the Interior Committee of the German Bundestag at the repeated request of the Union on the status of late repatriate admission in the Federal Republic. The chairman of the group of expellees, resettlers and German minorities of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Christoph de Vries, explains:

“It is good news for thousands of members of the German minority, especially in Ukraine and Russia, that the federal government has promised to return to the previous practice of accepting late resettlers as soon as possible. We are pleased that the persistence and constant pressure of the Union faction are in the spirit our compatriots have paid.

The necessary amendment to the Federal Expellees Act is currently being coordinated by the departments and the legislative project should be completed by autumn at the latest. In the interest of those affected, the competent Federal Office of Administration will postpone applications that are threatened with rejection due to a counter-confession until the entry into force. We also demand that there be a possibility of revision for those applicants who have received a rejection notice due to the restrictive recognition practice of the traffic light government.

In addition, the federal government confirmed in a small question from our parliamentary group that the implementation decree on the counter-confession, which was the cause of the rejection, was only issued after the change of government. This means that the earlier statements made by Natalie Pawlik, the incumbent repatriate commissioner, have now been refuted.”
