Duisburg family loses second son under tragic circumstances

The background to the act is still unclear days later: Who was the perpetrator who stabbed umpteen times? Did the 35-year-old meet someone he knew in the dark? Or did a quarrel break out without any previous history? A homicide detective is investigating.

As obscure as the circumstances are, the pain of the loss is palpable in the family of the victim. “We have now lost two sons. We don’t have the strength anymore,” the father said in an interview the Rheinische Post.

What he means: In May 2013, her then 13-year-old son never returned from a trip to the Rhine with two friends. On the sunny afternoon, the young people encourage each other to jump into the dangerous river. You climb over a railing at the Kultushafen and lie down on a steep incline.

They joke and get cocky. Then a 16-year-old pushes the 13-year-old into the water. What he doesn’t know: his friend can’t swim.

The 13-year-old has no chance against the current and goes under. Two men jump after them, but can no longer see the child in the murky water.

Investigation success is still pending

Fire brigade and police move out. Boats and a helicopter are used to search for the youth. Even the most experienced rescue divers have to capitulate to the dangerous currents and poor underwater visibility.

Back then, the parents had to live with the uncertainty for days. Pastors look after them during the difficult hours. The body was not discovered until two weeks later in the docks of the Kultushafen. The autopsy confirms that he drowned.

After the second bad loss, the parents are now tormented by the question of why. The relatives hope that the perpetrator will be identified quickly. The police already secured evidence on the night of the crime, and on Tuesday the investigators were there again with a sniffer dog. In the past few days, they have also interviewed residents in the old town. However, the investigation has not yet been successful.
