Delta plane traveling to Fort Lauderdale is diverted to Atlanta due to incident with a passenger

A Delta Air Lines plane bound for Fort Lauderdale had to divert to Atlanta on Wednesday due to an incident with a passenger, the airline said.

The flight had left Detroit Metropolitan Airport and was headed to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport when it had to be diverted and landed in Atlanta.

Federal Aviation Administration officials confirmed that the Boeing 737 diverted due to an altercation with an “unruly passenger.”

A Delta spokesman said law enforcement was waiting for the flight at the Atlanta gate before it continued to Fort Lauderdale with a new crew.

The spokesman did not provide details about what happened, but in a statement said the airline does not tolerate threats or abuse of employees or customers.

“At Delta, the safety and well-being of our customers and crew is, and always will be, our number one priority. We are in contact with our flight attendant to provide support and are cooperating with authorities in their investigation,” the statement read. release. “Delta has long been a leading advocate on behalf of our people and our customers to ensure the aggressive and timely prosecution of unruly passengers.”

The FAA said they are investigating the incident.
