MUNICH.- Denmark advanced to the round of 16 of the Eurocup after drawing 0-0 with Serbia on Tuesday.
The Danes finished Group C activity with three points, the same as Slovenia, but finished in second place due to a better qualifying round. Slovenia, which drew 0-0 with group leaders England, also advanced to the knockout round.
Denmark had the most chances even though Serbia needed a win to advance to the next phase, most of them through Christian Eriksen, who was making a record 133 appearances for his country.
Denmark and Slovenia finished tied on points, goal difference, goals scored and disciplinary points.
The result between the Slovenians and the English also eliminated Croatia, which finished third in Group B.
Also on Tuesday, Kylian Mbappé scored his first goal in a Euro and France drew 1-1 against Poland. Les Bleus finished second in Group D, behind Austria, which won 3-2 over the Netherlands.
Novak Djokovic went to the Munich stadium to cheer on Serbia. The fabulous tennis player entered the court before the match, to chants of “Nole” by his country’s fans.
Tuesday’s match provided the longest wait for the first scoring opportunity in this edition of the Euro. Danish defender Alexander Bah headed wide in the 16th minute.
Denmark came closer five minutes later when Eriksen’s shot was deflected wide of the post by goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic.
Goals disallowed:
Moments later, the Danes put the ball in the net, but the goal was disallowed because Jonas Wind had knocked down Rajkovic after a struggle. The two players and the ball fell to the other side of the goal line, after a corner kick taken by Eriksen.
Serbia’s goal was also disallowed at the dawn of the second half. Luka Jovic, one of three players who came on as a half-time substitute for the Balkans, was left in an advanced position before Joachim Andersen sent the ball into his own goal.
