The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantisannounced Monday that it will seek to eliminate the constitutional guarantee of citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants born in the United States.

So-called “birthright citizenship” has long been considered protected by the 14th Amendment, and guarantees citizenship to all individuals “born or naturalized in the United States,” and its removal was proposed among other measures regarding migration that DeSantis advanced in conference press in Texas.

In a detailed immigration hit list, DeSantis, who also spoke to supporters and reporters in the border town of Eagle Pass, pledged to “take steps to end the idea that the children of illegal aliens have a right to citizenship.” by right of birth if they are born in the United States.

“Offering the award of citizenship to the future children of illegal immigrants is one of the main drivers of illegal immigration. It is also inconsistent with the original interpretation of the 14th Amendment, and we will force the courts and Congress to address it once and for all. this failed policy,” he added.

According to his speech, the Republican is opposed to the idea that one can reach the US across the border and have a child to become regular.

“That was not the original understanding of the 14th Amendment and therefore we are going to take steps to force a clarification of that,” he told reporters at the news conference.

His pronouncement at the immigration policy launch seemed framed to leave open how he would try to challenge the policy.

DeSantis submitted more than 30 policy proposals, including several aimed at building a wall along the southern border and others aimed at holding drug cartels accountable.

This is the first detailed initiative promoted by the governor of Florida since the launch of his presidential campaign and it coincides to a large extent with the Republican proposals on immigration of former president Donald Trump.

In May, the Florida Legislature passed a controversial bill to curb and persecute immigrants in an irregular situationand penalize with prison sentences the people who transport them or provide them with support within the territory.

The law prevents local governments from funding organizations to issue identity documents to people who are in the country illegally; invalidates driver’s licenses issued in other states and held by unauthorized immigrants; and penalizes permanent residents or US citizens who protect, cover up or travel in the same vehicle with an undocumented person with penalties of between five and 15 years in prison.
