Berlin.
Despite an agreement in the collective bargaining dispute, things can still get stuck at Deutsche Bahn on Monday, especially in the regional area. The company is accommodating.

The train drivers’ union EVG and Deutsche Bahn averted a 50-hour strike with the last-minute agreement on Saturday. Nevertheless, train cancellations and delays can occur nationwide, both in long-distance traffic and regionally. Because the rosters of thousands of employees had to be synchronized at short notice, the railways had already warned of disabilities on Saturday. A spokesman said early on Monday morning that rail operations “had largely started as planned”. Because many customers had already booked their trip in advance, the train is now accommodating them.

Deutsche Bahn: 90 percent of long-distance traffic guaranteed

According to this, around 90 percent of long-distance trains will run according to plan on Monday. If you have planned a trip, you should find out which trains are running. Hardly any strike-related restrictions are to be feared in regional and S-Bahn traffic.

At the weekend, Deutsche Bahn had warned that a third of the planned long-distance trains would not run on Monday. All ICE and IC trains will only be back on the road as planned from Tuesday. The reason for the restrictions and failures on Monday was the difficult organization: “Since yesterday, around 50,000 train journeys nationwide in long-distance and local traffic alone, as well as the associated shift and deployment plans, have been rescheduled,” said the railway headquarters. In addition, some of the wagons and locomotives would have to be brought to new departure points.

Flexible use: Bahn accommodates train passengers with a goodwill arrangement

Anyone who has already booked a trip in advance can count on goodwill.

  • Tickets booked before May 11th lose their train connection if they were valid for the strike days on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Tickets from May 15th and 16th can therefore be used in local and long-distance traffic up to and including May 24th at no extra charge.
  • Alternatively, Deutsche Bahn offers to cancel tickets free of charge during the affected period.

On Monday, Deutsche Bahn announced that the full range of trains would be available to passengers in long-distance and local transport on Tuesday. Restrictions can still be expected in freight traffic on Monday and Tuesday. The warning strike called by the railway and transport union (EVG) was to begin at 10 p.m. on Sunday and end 50 hours later, at midnight on Tuesday.

Ascension Day: Bahn warns of travel on the long weekend

The EVG had surprisingly canceled the planned strike on Saturday. Previously, there had been an agreement in the collective bargaining dispute with the railways mediated by the Frankfurt am Main Labor Court, which will now form the basis of further collective bargaining. The bargaining round affects 230,000 employees, 180,000 of whom work for Deutsche Bahn.

Although Deutsche Bahn is accommodating its customers with the goodwill arrangement, train passengers could face further difficulties as a result. Because Thursday’s Ascension Day is expected to see a lot of traffic. Even on the long weekend, there could be crowded trains and further delays. “We recommend that you postpone your trip – if possible – to May 16, 2023,” the press office said.

Private providers are still negotiating: many failures in regional traffic

While Deutsche Bahn was able to avert the standstill with the agreement, EVG continues to negotiate with around 50 private railway companies. As Abellio announced, there are restrictions in Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt that are to be bridged with replacement traffic.

In Brandenburg, the Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn (Odeg) announced significant failures, the Erfurt Bahn switched to a two-hour cycle. There is good news from the state railways: After the agreement, they can also continue to operate in Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia as planned on Monday. (sec/dpa)
