The high demand for the Deutschlandticket is overloading the Deutsche Bahn systems. This is now asking buyers to be patient.

The Germany ticket is apparently very popular: since Monday, the nationwide ticket can be used for buses and trains – if you can get it. Because at the start of 49-Euro-Tickets some things weren’t quite running smoothly. There is currently a disruption on the Deutsche Bahn website. “At the moment, many people are trying to buy a Germany ticket at the same time, so that our systems are unfortunately overloaded. Please try again later,” it said. Also in the DB-App the message is displayed.

According to a projection by the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), well over three million people already have the new one for May Ticket solved, which applies nationwide in local public transport. According to the association, this includes 750,000 people who did not previously have a local transport subscription.

Deutschlandticket: Deficits in digitization

The ticket is sold by the vast majority of regional transport companies and Deutsche Bahn. Various companies also offer apps that can be used to take out monthly subscriptions. In the case of controls, the subscription can be chip card or be presented with a mobile phone ticket. Paper tickets with a QR code will also be issued by the end of the year.

According to Transport Minister Volker Wissing, the difficulties complained about by passengers when ordering and sending the new Deutschlandticket show deficits in the digitalization. “These are problems that are related to the fact that we do not have sufficient digitization in sales,” said the FDP politician. However, these difficulties were by no means universal. You shouldn’t simply continue to write outdated structures and talk yourself into something like: “Yes, the paper ticket has proven itself so well. That’s wonderful.” You can see what problems it causes.

Rolf Erfurt, CEO of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe, admitted that there had been problems with the chip card manufacturers. “But that has now been remedied and all chip cards are now also being sent.”

49-euro ticket: More demand, but not suddenly

The VDV and Deutsche Bahn assume that 17 million people will have this in the future Germany ticket will gain. However, because of the ticket, overcrowded trains are not expected in May. “We assume that we will have a noticeable increase in demand with the Deutschlandticket,” said Evelyn Palla, who is responsible for regional transport on the Deutsche Bahn board of directors, the German Press Agency. “But that will not happen suddenly on May 1st.”

The 9-euro ticket was a limited promotion for three months, “where everyone wanted to get their hands on the ticket quickly to enjoy it,” said Palla. The demand at the Deutschlandticket will be continuously built up over the coming months.

“We expect that the demand for the Deutschlandticket will be particularly high in the cities and metropolitan regions. We also have a denser range of public transport there,” said DB Manager Palla. “We saw with the 9-euro ticket that we sold more tickets in the regions where we had a good one Public transport offer have. That is why it is so important to me that we create offers for environmentally friendly local public transport in places where there is not enough today. (lro/dpa)
