The developers of The Last of Us have given more details about the origins of the “clickers“, the infected enemies that appear in the game.
Naughty Dog has turned to the tenth anniversary with the premiere of its TV series, hinting at a possible The Last of Us 3 and anticipating future events of the highly anticipated independent multiplayer game.
As HBO’s promotion of The Last of Us series, the lead developers have been running several press releases detailing behind-the-scenes information about the game that both long-time and new fans can appreciate.
In the second post in Naughty Dog’s new series to hit YouTube, the developers detail the origins of The Last of Us’s iconic enemies, the clickers.
In the video, Neil Druckmann, co-chairman of Naughty Dog, explains that when the studio was developing The Last of Us, they wanted to differentiate their series from the abundance of zombie apocalypse stories. Instead of just creating zombies, the studio decided to create a new type of infected creature that players could experience that was unique to The Last of Us universe.
The concept of infectious fungi is inspired by the real life infectious fungi known as Cordyceps. In the game, Cordyceps begin to infect humans and travel to their brains, removing their vision in the process. As a result, audio design became a major focus in the creation of the clickers, as sound becomes their primary form of communication and location of future prey.
