Take out your bows and arrows and join the band of Robin Hood, watching the film broadcast this Monday, December 26, 2022 at 9:10 p.m. on France 3! In this feature film released in cinemas in 2018, the most famous of thieves is played by Taron Egerton, seen in particular in the formidable Rocketmanthe biopic of Elton John where he really sings, as well as in the first two parts of the saga Kingsman (even if he almost did not resume his role in the second opus). At his side, we find Jamie Foxx, who can be seen in Day-Shift on Netflix, as well as Jamie Dornan, aka Christian Gray in the saga Fifty Shades of grey.

Robin Hood, an essential figure in cinema

Taron Egerton is of course not the first actor to slip into the skin of Robin de Locksley, as the hero has inspired filmmakers… and for a very long time already! Already, in 1938, The Adventures of Robin Hood, with Errol Flynn, narrated the adventures of the thief and his friends struggling with Prince John. In the 1970s, two feature films were also devoted to him, with very different treatment, however. Indeed, one is the famous Walt Disney cartoon released in 1973, and the other, entitled The Rose and the Arrow, features an aging Robin Hood played by the late Sean Connery, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 90. Closer to home, we remember Kevin Costner in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves in 1991 and Russell Crowe in 2010, in the film directed by Ridley Scott. Even French cinema has taken hold of the legendary British hero with Anthony Marciano’s film, Robin Hood, the real storyreleased in 2015. Max Boublil, who embodies the thief, insisted on the fact that this 100% French version was “a real adventure movie“.

Robin Hood, real hero or fictional character?

In his adventures, Robin Hood rubs shoulders with personalities who really existed and who have marked the history of England, such as King Richard the Lionheart and his brother John Lackland. One could therefore imagine that the hero stealing from the rich to give back to the poor also existed… Well, know that it is not so! Even if he seems familiar to us, Robin Hood is indeed a fictional character, who appeared in the 13th century in stories that were told orally, before becoming a literary character. His name is mentioned for the first time in writing in Peter the Plowmanwritten by William Langland in 1377. Subsequently, the legend of Robin Hood was forged through ballads, songs of gesture, plays and novels until it became the great hero we know. today and that we find in so many films.
