Doctors protest the lack of supplies and food for patients at the General Hospital of Guerrero

CHILPANCINGO, GRO. (appro) receive food because the supplies ran out at the hospital and the authorities still do not supply them.

Today the staff protested to demand that their needs be met and to denounce what they experience in the main public care hospital in the port.

The union leader of the hospital, Mayanin Zúñiga Leyva, denounced through a video that circulated through social networks, that the hospital’s food warehouse is empty. These inputs are for the diets of the patients and for the personnel who work in the accumulated shift and the personnel of the night special, also for internal doctors and residents.

“We have been lacking for months, but yesterday (Sunday) it was definitely accentuated, such is the degree that the patients did not eat or have dinner, nor did the patients or the staff who work a 12-hour day,” he commented.

He took advantage of that video to present a man who, he said, is an employee of a tortilla shop and went to the hospital, on orders from his employer, to collect the debt that the administration has for tortillas. He asked for an advance of at least 2,592 pesos to be able to supply.

“He has a fairly large debt since they are the ones that supply the tortillas for this entire hospital,” said the union leader, whom they consider to be close to the general secretary of Section 36 of the Health Workers Union (SNTS), Beatriz Velez Nunez.

The leader called on Vélez Núñez and the hospital authorities to pay attention to this pressing need.

The protest consisted of the doctors, nurses and administrative workers of the El Quemado General Hospital pasting banners on the walls of the building where they wrote their slogans: “In my 50 years of service, a patient has never been without lunch or dinner”, ” Suspension of surgeries due to lack of air conditioning”, “Out with the administrator for being corrupt”, was read on some attached cardboard.

Yesterday they also did the same.

The workers raised the departure of the general director of the hospital, Santos Olivares Pineda and the administrative chief, Saúl Jonathan Santiago, whom they point to alleged acts of corruption.

The lack of supplies for food, material and medicine, such as anesthetics, and efficient air conditioning in operating rooms, was denounced last Friday by the same leader of Section 36 of the National Union of Health Workers (SNTS).

He shared with reporters that the surgeries were suspended because there will be no conditions. That is to say, the most important public care hospital in the state does not currently provide the surgical service due to lack of conditions. The General Hospital of El Quemado was inaugurated by then President Enrique Peña Nieto and former Governor Héctor Astudillo in January 2018.

Until now, the state Health Secretariat has not publicly responded to the workers’ complaint.
