It is the Swedish people who own the properties that the king has the right to use according to the right of disposition from 1809. Most of the maintenance, renovations and in some cases also rents are paid with tax funds.

In 2020 and 2021 alone, the cost to taxpayers for operation and maintenance for three of the castles – Haga, Drottningholm and Stockholm – was over SEK 162 million.

Rented out to friends and employees

The residences that the king decides on are rented out, among other things, to the royal household’s staff. One of those who received a cultural center in Hagaparken is the king’s governor Staffan Larsson. He pays SEK 16,600 a month in cold rent for the 221 square meter house.

But there are more homes than the number of employees and the royal family has let friends and relatives rent attractive homes. All three of Princess Christina’s sons have also been given a house within the right of disposal by the king.
