Over the weekend, Psychonauts 2 creator Double Fine released a massive documentary about the development of the game. The game studio has released all 32 episodes for free on YouTubein what encompasses the entire development process of the game – from the first steps to completion in 2021.

The documentary is called Double Fine PsychOdyssey, clocking in at around 22 hours, with varying lengths of the different episodes. 2 Player Productions has been behind the production, having previously made documentaries about, among other things, the partly Kickstarter-funded game Broken Age for Double Fine.

– Ten years after the release of the blockbuster Psychonauts, Double Fine Productions returns to its most acclaimed game series with Psychonauts 2. Now facing the pressure to produce a worthy sequel, the studio must confront overly ambitious designs, lack of fighting spirit, technical challenges and financial problems , all during a turbulent time for the world, says the video description on YouTube.

– Double Fine’s best game

When the game came out in 2021, our reviewer lavished praise on the project. Some criticism was nevertheless directed at parts of the mechanics, but everything was overshadowed by an overall experience that surprised. He ended up calling it Double Fine’s best game.

– It is a light-hearted and exuberant action platform adventure that at the same time impressively manages to be thought-provoking, deeply exploratory, and heavily melancholy. […] Psychonauts 2 could certainly benefit from a few tweaks, but that doesn’t stop the game from being one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had in years, our reviewer concluded.
