After a massive glitch when downloading the Abitur tasks, the Ministry of Education in North Rhine-Westphalia has now postponed the exams to Friday. Teachers, students and parents are appalled.

A big bang at the start of the Abitur in North Rhine-Westphalia: An enormous glitch when downloading the tasks of the central Abitur has meant that the Abitur exams have to be postponed by two days.

As the Ministry of Education announced in an email, the exams are being postponed due to a “massive technical problem”. The problem: The centrally set examination tasks could not be reliably downloaded everywhere. Exams were planned for tomorrow, Wednesday, in biology, chemistry, nutrition, computer science, physics and technology.

“The technical fault could not be remedied in time during the course of today, so that the written Abitur examinations scheduled for Wednesday have to be postponed to Friday, April 21, 2023, which has so far been free of examinations,” said a statement from the Ministry of Education. “The schools were continuously informed about the disruption and in the evening about the postponement.”

“extremely annoying”

“The disruption and short-term postponement of the Abitur exams is extremely annoying,” said School and Education Minister Dorothee Feller (CDU). “The high school graduates have prepared intensively for their exams. It is all the more annoying that a disruption in the download meant that the schools did not receive the tasks on time. The Ministry of Schools and Education will deal with the massive disruption together with the work intensively with external service providers and create a precise error analysis and draw the necessary conclusions from this so that the tests can be carried out without problems on the following days.”
