In France, they would be 200,000 to produce cannabis in their garden. This illegal practice tends to develop, in particular thanks to the Internet. The 20 Hours teams investigated this phenomenon.
For 20 years, a former gallery owner has been growing his own cannabis, a psychotropic and illicit drug. He plants about ten plans each year, or 500 g of grass per year. According to him, his harvest is intended for his own consumption or that of his family. Its purpose is to save money. An economical practice, but still illegal. From a single foot of cannabis, the offense is criminal. For the production of narcotics, the penalty incurred can be up to 20 years’ imprisonment.
200,000 farmers
According to the 2017 health barometer, this sanction does not deter 200,000 cannabis growers, or 7% of consumers. The drug is grown in gardens, but also indoors. Sometimes several dozen feet grow out of sight. This practice is favored by the ease of obtaining seeds. On the Internet, foreign sites offer different varieties. In France, selling and buying them is legal, supposedly to collect them. A few growers become sellers and traffic with their own cannabis. These private productions are difficult for the authorities to detect.
