Together with the Johanniter partner organization MAPs, the Johanniter provide 15,000 people in the Gaziantep region with warm meals. This help is to be extended to other regions in Turkey and northern Syria in the coming days.

In a first emergency aid measure, the Johanniter team bought groceries yesterday in the Turkish city of Gaziantep together with its long-standing partner MAPs in order to provide 15,000 people with hot meals every day.

“People have been living in the freezing cold for days without electricity or heating, so the daily hot soups also help warm them up a little,” says Sevin Ibrahim, Johanniter program manager. The food will be distributed to people in mosques and schools where people sought shelter after the earthquake. “Nobody sleeps in their apartment anymore. They prefer to stay in the shelters together,” Sevin continued. Because there are still smaller tremors every day.

In order to also supply the people in the hard-hit Hatay province, the Johanniter and MAPs will set up more soup kitchens here in the coming days.

Help in Northern Syria

In addition to emergency aid in Turkey, Johanniter will focus on helping the people in Syria. The region around Afrin in north-western Syria and its sub-district Jendiris are particularly hard hit by the disaster, as they are in close proximity to the epicenter of the earthquake. Up to 580 people have died here alone, with people still buried under the rubble.

“The injured have no access to life-saving medical care because there is a lack of medical supplies and fuel for the generators,” report the employees of the Johanniter partner organization BAHAR.

Together with BAHAR, the Johanniter are therefore currently examining the delivery of medical supplies, food and material to protect against the cold. With their partner MAPs, further soup kitchens are to be built here in order to provide people with food on a daily basis.

More Johanniter in the disaster area

In addition to the five-person emergency aid team, another volunteer emergency helper is traveling to Turkey today. He is part of the European Union expert team that supports the coordination of the European civil protection units.

The Johanniter and “Aktion Deutschland Hilft” are urgently dependent on donations for earthquake relief in Turkey and Syria:
