Dusseldorf.
Hundreds of visitors stood in front of closed doors during the “Rundgang” at the Düsseldorf Art Academy: the reason is probably an invalid choice.

Hundreds of visitors did not come into the exhibition during the traditional “tour” at the renowned Düsseldorf Art Academy on Saturday. Most of the students left the rooms with their works of art locked. In this way they wanted to protest against the invalidation of the election of the architect Donatella Fioretti as rector.

A large majority showed solidarity with the “elected candidate” Fioretti, it was a democratic election in which everything went according to law, said student representatives. They also wanted the action to be understood as a sign that this attitude was not divided: 20 out of 22 classes joined the protest.

election should be repeated

Fioretti, who has been a professor of architecture in Düsseldorf since 2017, was elected rector shortly before Christmas in a meeting that was held partly in attendance and partly online. The opposing candidate was the provisional rector and professor of art history, Johannes Myssok. The NRW Ministry of Science declared the election on Wednesday to be invalid due to procedural errors. When voting in a hybrid session of the 15-member Senate, the necessary publicity within the university was not created. The election should be repeated.

During the “tour” the young artists present their semester and final theses. The doors of the academy have been open for this since Wednesday. World-class artists such as Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys, Günther Uecker, Andreas Gursky and Jörg Immendorff emerged from the Academy. (dpa)
