Emergency declared in the city due to extreme heat

Mayor Adams held a briefing on Monday to issue recommendations for dealing with the extreme heat expected this week.

Speaking at the city’s Department of Emergency Management headquarters and surrounded by several officials, the mayor explained that the heat alert begins at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. High humidity is expected and temperatures are expected to reach 101 degrees Fahrenheit.

The heat alert will be extended until this Wednesday.

Yokarina Duarte, chief of staff for the city’s Department of Emergency Management, urged New Yorkers to take precautions.

“We want you to take this heat wave and be prepared. That’s why we need you to sign up for NOTIFY NYC so that you and your family are up to date on this heat wave and how to protect yourself.”

The City Department of Buildings also issued an alert on social media advising those who work outdoors to take extra precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

The agency called on New Yorkers to make sure they stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade:

NOTIFY NYC is the agency’s online site where citizens can stay informed about everything related to the emergency.

The mayor added that the city will make available 500 cooling centers throughout the city that will be open from tomorrow until Wednesday.

Beaches will also be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. And swimming pools will be open with extended hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Department of Homeless Services issued a Code Red alert urging people, particularly seniors, to access cooling centers.

The mayor recommended that we keep an eye on our neighbors, especially the elderly and those who suffer from respiratory problems.

If you want more information about cooling centers in your neighborhood, you can call 311.

Governor Kathy Hochul spoke out about the heat wave and high humidity that will affect the state until Wednesday.

Hocul also said that since Monday there have been air quality problems throughout the region, and he called for precautions to be taken.
