Last Saturday a new situation arose when a taxi driver approached a driver from the Uniper company to intimidate him, demanding with insults that he show him the document of the previously contracted service, since “they were taking the ticket from the hotel where they were making room ”.
The events occurred in the surroundings of the Sun Scape hotel in the southern part of the island, where taxi drivers usually line up waiting for a guest who requires their services to transfer them to the city center or who wish to take a tour.
Likewise, last week taxi drivers from the local union blocked two transport units from the Uniper company, who tried to take foreign visitors for a ride, based on a concession that accredits them as “specialized transport.”
Subsequently, about 100 dissatisfied taxi drivers went to the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo), and displayed banners that read “Keep your campaign promise, otherwise the social peace of the island will be affected.”
Arturo Payán, general secretary of the Cozumel Taxi Drivers Union, said that they are only asking for the law to be applied. “Here is what can happen, what we are doing is not a threat, we simply ask that the authorities start doing their job,” he said. The demonstration also served to reiterate his request that more concessions be granted to taxi drivers on the island.
