Crystal Villegas fought hard against fungal meningitis but died

Crystal Villegas passed away this past Sunday after fighting for four months against fungal meningitis that was diagnosed after undergoing cosmetic surgery in Matamoros, Tamaulipas.

“They were four hard months that she fought hard and never gave up. But unfortunately she just passed away,” Juan Tapia, Crystal’s husband, told Telemund 40. “For me it has been very difficult, very hard those couple of months , but I am at peace that she is resting,” added the man.

Villegas was admitted to Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen and wanted with all her heart to see her three young children grow up. She even regretted having the operation, as Juan recounted in a previous interview when his wife was still convalescing in the hospital.

Initially, right around the time of the surgery, everything seemed fine for Crystal. However, as the days went by, she began to complain of a headache and her condition did not disappear. Until one day her husband tried to pick her up. “She felt that she was hot, with a high fever and I said let’s go to the emergency room. That’s when she did a little more tests and the result came out that she had meningitis,” she explained.

In addition to Crystal, two of her friends have also passed away. Among them is Alma, who left behind a 5-year-old girl. The woman underwent cosmetic surgery last March. Initially the doctors told her that she only had neuralgia, until it was determined weeks later that she had meningitis.

Now the families of the victims of this unfortunate event send a message to the population: Accept yourself, love yourself and love yourself as you are.
