The merger between HBO Max and Discovery+ is finally going to happen. The move was confirmed by the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, at a press conference, and echoed by the company’s official social networks, which nailed it: the new streaming platform will only be called Max and its debut will take place on May 23.
The news of the merger of platforms is already old and was initially aired in early 2022 by the CFO of both companies, Gunnar Wiedenfels. At that time, Zaslav himself embodied the statements and said that the new platform would be one of the best streaming services in the world. And he spoke about it again at the conference this Wednesday (12):
“We’re excited that we’re going to be taking all the Discovery content and putting it together with the HBO Max content on a much better platform.”
With the merger, subscribers will be able to watch HBO, HBO Max and Discovery series on a single platform. And this will only be possible thanks to the merger of Warner Bros with Discovery, which resulted not only in the union of the two services, but also the shelving of projects and even the withdrawal of titles such as Westworld da HBO Max.
Plans and Brazil
Max already has three confirmed plans for US users:
Streaming Max plans in the US | |||||
Plano | concurrent devices | Image quality | Download to watch offline | Other features | Price |
Max Ad-lite | 2 | 1080p Full HD | No | 5.1 surround audio, ads | US$ 9,90 |
Max Ad Free | 2 | 1080p Full HD | Up to 30 | 5.1 surround audio | US$ 15,99 |
Max Ultimate Ad Free | 4 | 4K Ultra HD | up to 100 | Dolby Atmos audio | US$ 19,99 |
Elected the Best Online Film and Series Platform at the 6th Canaltech Awards, in Brazil HBO Max costs R$34.90 per month for new subscribers and offers quarterly and annual packages. With the move to Max, WarnerMedia needs to adapt values to remain attractive and not match Netflix, which has the most expensive subscription plans in the country.
In any case, what is known in advance is that all HBO Max and Discovery+ subscribers will be automatically migrated to Max as soon as the new platform goes live on May 23 in the US.
There is still no prediction of when Max will debut in Brazil.
