Who was Enrique Metinides, the legendary red note photographer?

A year ago, the photojournalist Enrique Metinides died, who with his red note photographs had exhibitions in various parts of the world and will now have a new one in the Los Pinos Cultural Complex, in the First Section of Chapultepec.

And before showing you 10 of his photos, we tell you a little about his story: According to Magazine 192, his parents, hailing from Athens, Greecethey settled in Mexico after a honeymoon trip bordered by the First World War, so it was born in the CDMX.

It would be right during his childhood that two things aroused his interest in photography, but mainly because of the red note: his closeness to cameras and the development process at his father’s shop, as well as his passion for gangster movies.

In fact, he recounted in a mini documentary that he made Vice Mexicothat from a very young age he got away with a camera and rolls that his dad gave him to take photos of crashed cars or went to the delegations to capture assaults or shootings.

It should also be noted that all these images were captured with a permit that the Public Ministry of Mexico City gave him, which he obtained at the age of 10. and with which he was also able to accompany police officers to photograph what the officers witnessed daily.

It would be Antonio Velázquez, a reporter from La Prensa, who would realize the interest and passion of little Enrique Metinides for the red note and who would offer him his first official job as a photographer.

And well, this is how his legend would also begin, capturing many different tragic scenes: from crashes to fires, through accidents, suicides, murders and assaults; but always taking the same people who approached the scenes to observe from a distance, from a safe place, the danger and death.
