Ukraine won the ESC in 2022 and should therefore actually host the contest. But because of the Russian war of aggression, Great Britain stepped in as the host country.

These are the “Big Five”
Since 2011, these “Big Five” have always reached the finals without a previous semi-final. The reason: They are not only the main sponsors, but also bring a large number of spectators with them. If you don’t have your own candidate in the final, the number of viewers will drop and this rule is intended to prevent that!
- Deutschland
- France
- Spain
- United Kingdom
- Italy
How the ESC participants are determined
Each country may determine its own participant. There are different ways to do this:
☞ Some countries have their own festivals like the Melodifestival in Sweden or the Festival da Canção in Portugal.
☞ Or the radio and television stations nominate their candidates directly.
☞ After all: The Germany winners Nicole (1982) and Lena (2010:) were found in national preliminary shows with an audience.
