The EU is offering EU citizens a new EU Emergency Travel Document. In the event of loss of the passport during a trip abroad, it is thus possible to return home with certainty. For this it is possible to consult the embassy or consulate of another EU member state.

Passport lost or stolen abroad? In such cases, there is now a remedy for EU citizens. There doesn’t even have to be a German embassy. In many cases, the consulates and embassies of other EU countries can also provide assistance – just as they would for their own citizens. For example, if an emergency travel document is required, in the event of arrest or imprisonment and for victims of crime/serious accidents or illness or even in the event of death.

The emergency travel document has been in the planning stage since 1996, when a common format was agreed with the EU member states. It was only in June 2019 that the directive passed the council with appropriate regulations and safety features. On December 8, 2022, a good 26 years later, the commission approved the technical details.

Unfortunately, it will still be some time before the pass is available. The pass will only be available in the form of a booklet with a sticker from December 2025. It only took about 30 years…
